It took over a week to put the list together.
Even if you don't like my choices or my rankings,
you've got to give me props for putting them in order!

What do you think?

I could never do this! I can't even name my favorite movie.

I remember a great Scorsese quote that I use now when people ask me my favorite movie....

He said, "THEY ARE LEGION."

I love it.

Congrats on doing this! Even though FARGO isn't in the top 50 and I don't even think I saw GOODFELLAS on here. For shame!

Damnit, I forgot Goodfellas.
The Naked Gun Series and Shaun of the Dead accidentally got knocked off too. I'll have to do an edit in a couple days. That's the trouble with making a list this big.

And you know, Fargo was farther down the list than I thought it would be. Guess that means I'm going to have to watch it again. Same thing goes with The Godfather II. I did re-watch Annie Hall for the list and it ended up not making the list. A few other Allen movies scored pretty high though.

I feel lame because I didn't get the "They Are Legion" comment. Help!

Congratulations on the list. I could never do that. I'd feel the need to rewatch them all, watch others I've never seen, and then I'd never finish it. I can barely get beyond my top ten.

I'd argue with it (you have one of my least favorite films in your top ten) but it is hard to argue with favorites. What you like, you like. Heck, GREASE 2 would make my top ten.

And I can't argue with THE WARRIORS.

I could never do this, and certainly not in order. That's why my "Films I Love" series is just a semi-random assortment of favorites that could, if I'm around and blogging long enough, theoretically be infinite. So big props on putting this together, even if it is rather heavy on 80s/90s films that I remember as lovably lousy more than actually good. Quite a few others would be on my list, though: Duck Soup, Rear Window, Kill Bill, Taxi Driver. All that plus THREE Woody Allen films, and not even the obvious ones -- that's real nice to see.

Scott, that was a very ballsy entry, and for that you should be applauded. I'm with everyone else: I don't know if I could compile a Top 100, and even if I could, it would take me a long time. Even when I give people my Top 10, I feel the need to amend it instantaneously.

Oh, and it's cool, I don't get the "They are legion" comment either.

Chutzpah, my friend. One of these days I hope I'll summon the same.

Really tremendous picture from Strangers on a Train - I look at it and it feels like it's moving (that could be somebody's blog banner).

Good on The Brave Little Toaster.

Great post ! I agree, many would argue my favs, and now I want to compile my own list !
God I love Goodfella's, I love Sean, I love a lot - guys....
I LOVE LASERBLAST. Laserblast. Let's be honest, would it make a top 100 ? Maybe now, but I friggen love it, now I gotta do it. Damn prps my man. And feel free to edit, its our world ! Btw, while I continue to promote my own blog - I posted links to my bad movie art today. See what you think of it. ~Fotog

Moviezzz, I've got to know which one's your least favorite. My guess would be wither Do the Right Thing or The Birdcage. It's The Birdcage, huh? Get back to me.

Ed - Thanks for the compliments. While making my list, I noticed that there weren't as many classics as I would have liked, but if I was being honest, I'd rather watch Nightmare on Elm Street III: Dream Warriors than 8 1/2.

Jonny - Thanks for backing me up on my ignorance. It's been driving me nuts.

Movieman - The Brave Little Toaster is the standard for late-80s/early-90s fucked up kids movies. Characters die in this movie. They die and don't come back. What? Paved the way for Land Before Time, another fucked up classic.

Fotog - I will see Laserblast, I swear to you. I have no idea what it's about, but I will see this.

Gringo,

I didn't see Brave Little Toaster till I was a little bit older but I saw Land Before Time when I was about 4. I think it helped shape me into a somewhat morbid child - gleefully morbid, but morbid nonetheless.

I did a write-up of Brave Little Toaster a few months ago after the passing Thomas Disch (writer of the book, whom I knew nothing about until reading his obit):

Yes, it is THE BIRDCAGE.

DO THE RIGHT THING would probably make my top twenty.

I'm impressed you put them in order. An near impossible task for me.

Reel Whore - It was a near impossible task for me too.

The toughest thing I've managed this year is trying to continually rank each 2008 release as I see it. I don't know if I'll be doing that next year.

Oh man, I have so much trouble compiling lists such as this... I could love a movie (or album, comic, TV show, cartoon, etc) or just think that it's meh depenending on my mood.

Having said that, I really need to watch Freestyle. I saw it at Borders bundled in a two pack (shakur, lol) with Scratch. I think I'll pick it up after I get my next paycheck. :D

It absolutely kills me that you have Dangerous Minds, The Karate Kid Part II, and Born in East L.A. in your top 10. KK Part II? What's wrong with the original?!? ;)

If I didn't know better, I'd swear that was Paul Giamatti to Teri Garr's right in that Tootsimage. Of course, he would have been about 20 when that came about, but I can dream, can't I?

Daniel said...

Wow, I have no idea how you were able to rank these. I have to stop at my #1: The Power of One. I think I would go crazy after that trying to rank - and you always leave things off, as you found out.

I love this list.

Oh, I just remembered about Sunshine. That would definitely be on my list. That's the problem with a Top 100.

elgringo said...

Just realized that State and Main isn't on the list. Sorry Meet the Feebles, but you're gonna get knocked off.

Though it's months later, I think I can explain the "They Are Legion" quote - it seems to me he's just saying that his favorite movies are legion, too numerous to count, rather than making any pun on a movie title.

Then again, perhaps I'm missing the reference too.

By the way, I'm hoping to start a "150" series in a month or two...150 favorite great movies. I can't quite call it a "favorites" list (for example, Jurassic Park and Batman probably won't be on it) nor could I call it strictly a best-ever list, because I'll only be dealing with Canonical Classics which I have a deep personal connection to, rather than ones which I admire but would not count among my "favorites." And no, I didn't want to narrow it down to 100. (As Scorsese said...)

There will be at least one film on the list which, if memory serves, you despise - as did most of your commentators.

elgringo said...

He Got Game should be on here too!

No Barton Fink? Come on...

Ghost World will be on my next update.
