Month of Foreign: Day Two: Porco Rosso

Sometimes I feel late on the Miyazaki bandwagon but then I remember that My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service were childhood favorites. Some of his later films, arguably his post popular, like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away didn't cast their magic spells over me. I never thought they were bad, they just didn't keep my interest. But after watching Ponyo and Porco Rosso, I think I'm ready to revisit them. I loved these two.

Have you seen Porco Rosso? What did you think?

I love Porco Rosso, and I don't think it gets nearly enough credit. Such a captivating tale, with magical characters, and a perfect plot. If you're ever up for revisiting it I recommend checking out the French dub as well (I know why watch a movie that's already in Japanese in French). Jean Reno = just amazing as the central character.

I just barely jumped on the Miyazaki train last month and have seen pretty much all his stuff except for Porco Rosso. I'll have to get it from the library next week.

It's a great film; heroic, romantic, funny.

Perhaps the most beautiful Miyazaki film to look at too.
