SHAME!

What film are you most ashamed you've never seen?
2001: A Space Odyssey

When I was younger, I swore off "Slow Walking on Spaceships" movies forever. That Solaris remake burned me...burned me bad. But the trouble with sci-fi is that you never know which movies feature slow walking, with Darth Vader-like breathing sounds, and hours of monotony and which ones are Blade Runner. So I didn't see any of them. Through the years, I've started lifting the ban and watching more science-fiction. Now, movies like Sunshine and  Aliens are among my favorites.

Still, something has kept me from watching 2001: A Space Odyssey.  Maybe it's the 160 -minute running time. Maybe it's because I know that Michael J. Fox doesn't star in the film even if he's displayed prominently on the front cover.  Whatever the reason, I'm still ashamed that I've never seen one of the most highly-praised films of all-time.

What film brings you the most shame?

@ J.D. and JLG... You both need to rent those movies as soon as humanly possible.

@ El Gringo... Right now SPIRITED AWAY is my most shameful omission. I actually did a top five about this a few months ago, and am happy to report that in the time since, I've seen two of the five I mentioned

Space Odyssey is also one of mine, plus Casablanca, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and The Godfather Pt.II. Sorry, I know you only asked for one, but I have loads of shame.

I know - it's crazy. I think I've probably seen all of it, but in pieces at different times.

Oh God, I thought I was the only one to not like 2001. God that movie is boring as hell.

Great call on the MJ Fox image. Haha.

Let's see...my list for something like this could be a mile long, probably. I finally watched Sunset Blvd. in the last year, so I'm good there. And Dr. Strangelove. And Jaws. And The Conversation.

Don't think I've seen all of Casablanca, so that's a good one. Gone with the Wind? Apocalypse Now? Schindler's List? Anything by Kurosawa, Butch Cassidy, Good Bad Ugly, Rio Bravo, Mag Seven, City of God...

I'll stop now. And for the record, I think I'll choose Apoc Now, since it's relatively new compared to those oldies, and I like to think I've seen much of the 'new' classics.

The Bridge on the River Kwai and All Quiet On the Western Front. Very ashamed indeed.

I've never seen Jaws.

More odd than shameful, but I feel like I missed a major event in 20th century cinema.

160 minutes is a long time. I've seen it, but don't be too ashamed. It's a hard film to honestly recommend -- I did a film project on Kubrick in college & that exposed me to most all of his work -- he can be kind of challening to watchi for pure-enjoyment.

The Best Years of Our Lives or Children of Paradise

J.D., JLG, and Elgringo, PLEASE rectify that situation! But don't pressure yourself so much that you don't enjoy the great films you've yet to see. They are well worth savoring, and the viewing should not feel forced.

I've pretty good about this sort of thing, at least by this point. But I'd say my most egregious omission is The Great Dictator which should very soon be corrected.

J.D - I know you're young man, but that the film. That like being a music lover without ever listening to The Beatles.

JLG - It's going to be okay. Just get in your car and drive to the nearest movie store. Don't rent, buy. Get the second one too, save yourself a second trip.

Mad Hatter - I loved your Top 5 List. Have you seen Ponyo yet?

Rachel - That is a jumbo-sized load of shame. Looks like a movie marathon is in order.

Fletch - Isn't The Conversation mind-blowingly incredible? I've never seen Apoc Now either. I did see Hearts of Darkness though...which I think is close enough.

Encore - It's okay, maybe war films just aren't your thing.

Runs Like a Gay - If you EVER get a chance to see JAWS on the big screen, do it. You will not regret it. It's a completely different film on the big screen.

RC - Thanks for the advice.

FilmDr - Thanks for commenting, Children of Paradise is one of my favorite movies. It's beautiful.

MovieMan - Stay the course, rectify your mistake and cleanse yourself of all your shame.

THANKS FOR THE COMMENTS, EVERYONE!

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY....

WATCH

THIS

MOVIE

IMMEDIATLY!!!!!!!!!

I'm not the kind of person that can name a favorite anything. Food. Family member. Part of woman's body. But I must say. 2001 is my favorite film of all time. It is the greatest achievement ever committed to celluloid and anyone that has not seen it is really missing out.

And anyone that has seen it and doesn't it like it automatically goes in my book as "PERSON NEVER TO LISTEN TO ABOUT ANYTHING BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW SHIT" list.

Watch it please!
